At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show the German supercar company Gumpert unveiled their second model, a two-seat GT car called the Gumpert Tornante. Since 2005 Gumpert have been making the Apollo, a giant-slaying supercar which eschews glamor and glitz for breathtaking performance and track success. One of the biggest 'complaints' concerning the Gumpert Apollo is the fact it's not the most comfortable or relaxing supercar to drive. In fact it's a bit of a handful. Therefore for Gumpert's second model they've decided to do a more luxurious GT car. The other area in which the Apollo has come in for criticism is the styling. The euphemism would be to call it 'controversial'. To prevent the same styling issues from affecting the new car, it is being designed by the Italians at Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera in Milan. Gumpert’s first car, the Apollo was devastatingly quick. Hard to drive, but stupidly fast. One thing it wasn’t was pretty. It looked good in a functional, no-nonsense sort of way, and you could forgive its aesthetic failings due to its sheer performance. Their second car might not have that luxury… Now that Gumpert have stepped back from the abyss of bankruptcy, they’ve decided that the best way forward is to attend the Geneva Motor Show with a brand-new prototype which they’ll be producing later this year. unfortunately it’s one of the ugliest prototypes outside of a Chinese auto show. Called the Gumpert Explosion, the new car is a two-seat coupe with awkward proportions, a fussy front end, a droopy back end and a soggy-looking middle. The only way they’re going to make this a success is if the Explosion is faster, better built and more dynamically capable of than all of its competitors. Gumpert have been taking names since 2005 when they rolled out the very first Apollo. Since then they’ve also developed the more mild mannered Tornante GT car. But the brutal Apollo has always been kinda their thing. Now, just in time for the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Gumpert have developed two even more hardcore versions of the Apollo, one for the track and one for the road. The track car, called the Gumpert Apollo R is an 860 hp monster. While the Apollo Enraged is a limited edition street car – limited to just three units. The Apollo Enraged is fitted with a 780 horsepower 4.2 litre Audi-sourced V8, and it’s about the closest you can get to a Le Mans car and still be road legal.
